My birthday parcel from my parents – which they posted weeks ago – still hasn’t arrived... (this is where my post goes).

Thursday, October 30, 2008

Look at them now (from two days ago)!

Wednesday, October 29, 2008

I took this for my Icelandic friend, because the headline of today’s paper is in Icelandic, and I don't think many foreign newspapers carry Icelandic headlines... It reads ‘God bless the Faroese’ and was written in a letter (one of many apparently) from Icelanders to the Faroese newspapers, as the Faroese have been the first nation to give Iceland financial support following the crisis (a whopping 300 million Danish kroner – about £30 million).

Unfortunately I can’t keep pets where I’m living, so you can imagine how happy I was when Nemo and Dory arrived – apparently, if I put them in water, they’ll be up to 4 times as big within two days. Very excited. Watch this space.

There’s snow, and it’s settling!

Sunday, October 26, 2008

Hoping the seats would be filled for the music festival, due to start in twenty minutes (and they certainly were!)

Saturday, October 25, 2008

The band went out for a celebratory meal at a rather nice hotel in Tórshavn (there were 35 of us, and it was very good!)

Friday, October 24, 2008

This is the corps in Tórshavn (thinking you may never have seen a Faroese Salvation Army corps before... Am I right?). And, now I look at it, this is a really gloomy photo – I’ll get a better one!

Thursday, October 23, 2008

After having breakfast with the mayor, six of us from the band went to play on the radio – this is me, somewhat excited, getting ready to play.

One of the great things about living in a different country is when you get a parcel full of things you love but can’t get where you are (conversely)!

The poster to advertise this Sunday’s music festival to celebrate 75 years of the Salvation Army band in the town:

This is the view I've had all day, so I thought I'd share it with you. It's my ceiling, because I haven't been too well and haven't left the house. I would just like to point out that this has absolutely nothing to do with yesterday's picture (seriously, I know what it was).

It can't be said that I don't try new foods. This is me eating the Faroese speciality, skerpikjöt. This is lamb that has been hung up to dry outside for four months.

The sun rising over Nólsoy Island. This was taken from the bus on the way to Klaksvík – I think the rain on the glass adds to it. I actually took a few photos I liked today, but I wasn’t sure which one to have (two of the others are here).

Had to rush home to see Talent 08, Denmark's answer to Britain's Got Talent (obviously a name change was needed) - I realise the last few days have made it look like TV controls my life... It doesn't, but there's a kid from the Faroes doing really well!

Thursday, October 16, 2008

This arrived in the post from my parents... Ah... ;)

Wednesday, October 15, 2008

Had to rush home for the Faroe Islands v. Lithuania game... The result wasn't as good as Saturday (1-0 to Lithuania), but not bad for the boys from the islands!

The inside of the SMS shopping centre (see here) - pretty cool, eh?

Monday, October 13, 2008

The front page of the Dimmalætting newspaper after the Austria result :)

Sunday, October 12, 2008

In every Salvation Army bandroom - without fail - there will be at least one black and white photo of the band from decades ago. I really like looking at them - this poster advertises the visit of the 'Faroese band' to Norway in 1935 - the size of the band is pretty impressive when you know that in 1935, the Salvation Army had only been on the Faroes for 11 years, and they'd only had a band for 2.

The Faroese players doing their lap of honour after their fantastic result against Austria :)
(I will just point out that the stand you can see in the background is the away stand, which, as I understand, is quite often empty at international games!)

This is for my brother... Look what I found, Paul!

Thursday, October 9, 2008

The SMS* shopping centre – it reminds me of London... Lol. But I actually really like it – it’s got some great shops and it’s so different to the vast majority of shopping centres which all look the same inside.
*SMS is actually an abbreviation of the Faroese word for ‘shopping centre’, sølumiðstøðin, rather than an attempt to be cool and hip!

Me and my Faroese Bible on the way to my first cell group (hoping they would just let me listen!)

Tuesday, October 7, 2008

Is this the world’s smallest Parliament building?

Monday, October 6, 2008

Mum and Dad went home after a fantastic weekend.

Looking out over Tórshavn.

Friday, October 3, 2008

Mum and Dad also fell in love with my favourite village in the Faroes, Viðareiði.

Thursday, October 2, 2008

Mamma and Pápi are in the Faroes! (Can you see them?)

Wednesday, October 1, 2008

I love it when the boats come in, because that’s when there’s tourists on the streets, wandering around with maps, and I can think ‘Ha, I know my way around’, and feel like I’m a local (this isn't the massive ship that connects us to Iceland and the rest of Scandinavia - that's here).
